Actor Jamie Bamber has joined the cast of the long-running British soap opera *EastEnders* as Ned Roper, a new character introduced amid unfolding family tensions in Walford. Bamber described Ned as a disciplined and resilient man, shaped by his military background and recent career change into therapy, who arrives in the Square with a complicated past and a fractured family.

Ned is part of the Hawkins family, newcomers to the show, who arrive in Walford seeking refuge after losing their home under traumatic circumstances. The family, originally from Essex, is portrayed as struggling to find stability, having endured significant hardships that include their house being destroyed. Despite the setbacks, Ned is characterized by his calm demeanor and ability to handle stressful situations—a trait linked to his experience as a former bomb disposal expert and, more recently, a PTSD therapist.

Bamber, whose previous roles include parts in *Battlestar Galactica* and *Law & Order: UK*, said joining *EastEnders* was an unexpected but welcome opportunity. Having witnessed the show's debut in 1985 and followed it as a fan, the actor noted his excitement at now being part of the series. He also revealed that for the first time in his career, he has a mentor on set, none other than veteran cast member Adam Woodyatt, who plays Ian Beale.

In the storyline, the Hawkins family’s arrival sparks immediate tension. Ned enters Walford when Nicola, his sister-in-law, is taken aback by the sudden reunion of her sisters Gemma and Jodie, as well as her nephew Ryder. Back at the Peacock Palace, residents Linda Carter and Elaine Peacock express impatience for Rose to move out, while another family intervention designed to reconcile Nicola and Rose ends in failure. Despite the ongoing conflicts, Nicola eventually softens her stance and agrees to let Gemma and Ned stay temporarily, setting the stage for further revelations about the Hawkins family’s circumstances.
