Jordan Petaia has returned to Australia’s national rugby union team, the Wallabies, following a brief stint pursuing a career in American football. The 26-year-old outside back, who last played for Australia at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, is included in the squad for Sunday’s Test match against South Africa in Perth.

Petaia took a break from rugby at the end of 2024 to pursue an opportunity in the National Football League (NFL). In April 2025, he signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers as a tight end under the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. However, his tenure with the Chargers was cut short four months later due to a hamstring injury, which led to him being waived by the club.

After his release from the Chargers, Petaia resumed his rugby career with the French Top 14 club Perpignan. He later moved to the Japanese club Urayasu D-Rocks in July 2026 before rejoining the Wallabies.

Speaking from the Wallabies camp in Perth, Petaia said he was content with the way his sports career had unfolded, despite the unexpected challenges in American football. “I’m happy with how everything is going and where my life’s at,” he said. Reflecting on his NFL experience, he noted it was a valuable learning period, allowing him to form new friendships and gain insights into professional sports preparation. He described those months as “nothing but good memories” despite the unfortunate injury.

Petaia also indicated that lessons learned during his NFL tenure positively influenced his approach to rugby, particularly in terms of match preparation and physical readiness.

Back with the Wallabies, Petaia welcomed the presence of his former Queensland Reds coach, Les Kiss, who now leads the national team. He highlighted the benefit of familiarity with Kiss while also appreciating recent changes in team culture. “It’s really looking good, and it’s fun to be around,” Petaia said, acknowledging the evolving atmosphere within the squad.

His return to the Wallabies marks a notable chapter after a global sporting journey spanning multiple countries and codes. The upcoming Test against South Africa will provide an opportunity for Petaia to reestablish his role on the international rugby stage.
