Aziz “Ringo” Abdul, the grandson of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, was disqualified in the third round of the super-heavyweight boxing match against England’s Damar Thomas at the Scottish Exhibition Centre. The referee ruled Abdul had committed a headbutt, a decision that sparked a heated post-fight confrontation.

Abdul vehemently contested the disqualification, accusing officials of corruption and biased officiating. Speaking in the mixed zone, he alleged unfair treatment influenced by negative media coverage of his grandfather and pointed to what he described as widespread fouls he believed went unpunished during the bout. “When other countries do this they are disqualified,” Abdul said, criticizing officials for what he perceived as inconsistent enforcement of rules. He further claimed that Thomas had been favored throughout the fight, saying, “He was the real person they wanted to win. He was the winner before.”

Despite the controversy, Abdul vowed to seek a rematch, promising future victory regardless of the timeline. “Next time, I will get him. Any time in the future. Two years, five years, ten years. I will show him that Aziz Ringo is a real warrior.”

Thomas, 21, from Kilburn, acknowledged the contentious ending but maintained his focus on the result. “I got the job done,” he said, noting that he had tried to avoid a clash of heads but Abdul continued to charge forward aggressively. “He’s running at me with his head,” Thomas added, expressing some regret over the way the fight concluded but emphasizing his victory.

In a quieter event at Scotstoun Stadium, England’s Elise Thorner delivered a standout performance in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase. Thorner ran a personal best time of 9:05.45 to secure the silver medal, finishing just behind a new Games record of 9:01.76.

Thorner’s performance was made more notable by her narrow victory over Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai, the Olympic silver medallist. Her competitiveness underscored her rising status in middle-distance running and added a positive highlight to the day’s athletics program.
