LIVERPOOL — Seventeen-year-old Rio Ngumoha played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s dramatic 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal at Anfield on October 20, sparking a comeback that secured the team’s third consecutive win in the competition.

Trailing by two goals early in the match, Liverpool looked out of sorts in the opening stages, struggling to contain Villarreal’s attacking threats. However, Ngumoha’s composure and creativity helped shift the momentum just before halftime. After Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister pulled one goal back, Ngumoha delivered a precise, delicately placed pass to Ronald Araujo, allowing the home side to equalize going into the break.

The 18-year-old then further asserted his influence in the second half by beating defender Sergi Cardona and setting up Mac Allister’s strike to put Liverpool ahead for the first time. Florian Wirtz later added a fourth goal for Liverpool to seemingly put the match beyond Villarreal’s reach, although Tani Oluwaseyi’s late goal forced a tense finish.

Ngumoha’s performance was notable not only for its impact on the game but also for the records he set. He became the youngest Liverpool player to register an assist in the Champions League, a milestone he acknowledged with pride. “As I get older now, affecting games is really important. And today, to get two assists and help the team get the three points, there’s nothing more I can ask for,” Ngumoha said after the match.

The young midfielder has already made club history as Liverpool’s youngest Premier League scorer at Anfield, netting his first goal last April at age 17. Earlier in his career, he became the team’s youngest-ever scorer during a Premier League match against Newcastle United in August 2025 at age 16.

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge praised Ngumoha’s natural ability during the broadcast, highlighting the teenager’s skill on the ball as "God-given" and difficult to teach.

With the win, Liverpool maintain their perfect record in the Champions League group stage, moving closer to securing advancement to the knockout rounds. The high-scoring match at Anfield was emblematic of a star in the making, with Ngumoha’s contributions signaling his growing importance to the club’s aspirations in Europe this season.
