A Portsmouth, New Hampshire man faces multiple charges after allegedly driving while intoxicated twice within a span of less than three hours, according to local authorities.

Michael E. Stiles, 25, was initially found unresponsive at his residence on Monday evening following a reported overdose and was revived using Narcan, officials said. Approximately an hour later, police arrested Stiles after he reportedly collided with a parked police cruiser in the vicinity of his home. While the responding officer was unharmed, the cruiser sustained significant front-end damage and required towing.

Following the first arrest, Stiles was charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and released on personal recognizance with instructions not to operate a vehicle while his case was pending. However, shortly after midnight Tuesday, authorities located Stiles at National Wrecker towing service, where he was allegedly attempting to access the rear of a white BMW. Police say Stiles admitted he arrived in a separate vehicle, which was discovered running nearby.

He was promptly taken into custody on a second DWI charge as well as for breaching bail conditions. Police cited the brief interval between the overdose incident, the initial impaired driving arrest, and his subsequent vehicle operation as key factors in the bail violation.

Stiles appeared in Portsmouth District Court on Tuesday and Wednesday to answer to the charges. He entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday for the second DWI charge and bail violation and similarly pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to the charges stemming from the Monday night incident, which include driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. Court records indicate he was ordered held without bail following these proceedings.

This is not Stiles’ first encounter with the law related to unsafe driving. In 2023, he pleaded guilty to reckless driving after causing a rollover crash on Interstate 95 in Amesbury, Massachusetts. His sentence included a 60-day license suspension, two years of probation, and a suspended one-year jail term that was not served.

The case remains active as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Stiles’ alleged offenses.
