Dr Anannya Kar, a 51-year-old consultant gynaecologist working for Bournemouth Hospital in Dorset, died following a high-speed cycling accident in Switzerland. The incident occurred on May 24 near Bern while she was participating in a cycling trip with a group of medical colleagues.
Dr Kar, an experienced cyclist who regularly rode at home in the United Kingdom, fell from her bicycle at speed and sustained serious injuries. She was airlifted to a hospital in Bern, where she received medical treatment but ultimately died two days after the crash. Her husband, Dr Partha Kar, a diabetes consultant based in Portsmouth, Hampshire, flew to Switzerland after being informed of the accident and was by her side at the time of her passing.
The couple met during medical school in India and had lived in the UK since around the year 2000, both serving the National Health Service (NHS). They are survived by their two children, Anushka, 24, and Arjun, 20.
Dr Partha Kar described his wife as having a strong passion for cycling, noting recent trips to Italy and Switzerland, including visits to Lucerne and Bern, where the accident occurred. He expressed profound grief at her loss, describing an "incredible hole" left in the lives of their family and friends.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr Anannya Kar was respected for her efforts in early cancer detection and conducted charity work in India twice annually. Colleagues praised her for her kindness and dedication both professionally and personally, emphasizing her focus on patient care and family. Dr Partha Kar reflected on her approach to medicine, highlighting her commitment to clear communication and ethical decision-making within hospital settings.
The circumstances of the accident remain under review, with authorities investigating the exact cause of the fall. Meanwhile, the medical community mourns the loss of a committed and compassionate practitioner who made significant contributions to women’s health.
