The Niagara Region in Ontario has extended an invitation to residents of Buffalo, New York, through an open letter published in the Buffalo News on October 3, emphasizing the close cross-border ties between the two communities despite ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
The letter, issued by Niagara Falls Tourism, encourages Americans to visit the Niagara Region on Saturday to witness a special fireworks display over Niagara Falls. The show will be illuminated in red, white, and blue, the team colours of the Buffalo Bills football team, underscoring the spirit of regional camaraderie.
The correspondence expresses gratitude to Buffalo for its role as a nearby neighbour and highlights the longstanding relationship shared by the two areas along the Niagara River. It references recent moments of mutual support, including Buffalo fans singing the Canadian anthem, "O Canada," during the Bills’ home opener on September 17. Canadians responded in kind, joining in from stadiums, sports bars, and homes nationwide.
Additionally, the letter notes that Buffalo recently erected billboards throughout Southern Ontario featuring the phrase "We’re still singing it," a nod to the anthem’s shared connection, and states the Niagara Region wants to reciprocate that goodwill.
Earlier this year, a similar show of solidarity was displayed during the National Hockey League playoffs, when many hockey enthusiasts in the Niagara Region voiced support for the Buffalo Sabres. St. Catharines city councillor Kevin Townsend described the cross-border relationship as a "lifelong friendship," emphasizing that local ties remain strong even amid escalating trade disputes between the two countries.
The letter and related activities highlight how sports continue to serve as a bridge between communities divided by national boundaries yet united by shared geography, culture, and history.
