Nico Gonzalez has chosen to join Newcastle United this summer, turning down offers from several teams competing in the UEFA Champions League. Gonzalez, a former Spain Under-21 international, displayed his influence on the game with an impressive 40-yard pass that set up Amar Dedic. Dedic subsequently assisted Anthony Elanga for a well-executed goal, highlighting Gonzalez’s creativity and vision in midfield.

Despite interest from other clubs, Gonzalez emphasized that Newcastle was the right fit for his career at this stage. “I had other options,” he said, declining to name specific teams or coaches. “If I go to the future and things don’t work well I don’t have regrets. This is the best move for me.”

The 24-year-old pointed to the trust placed in him by Newcastle’s head coach, Matthias Jaissle, as a significant factor in his decision. “They made me feel like they trusted me so much. That’s really important for a player,” Gonzalez added. He acknowledged the difficulty of securing regular first-team opportunities at Manchester City and expressed his desire to play consistently each weekend, something he believes Newcastle can offer.

Jaissle also played a key role in persuading Gonzalez to sign and was careful in naming him in the starting lineup for the German coach’s first league win. The former Barcelona youth player said he appreciates the confidence and status he has been granted at Newcastle, contrasting it with his time at City where he worked alongside established stars.

“When I met with the coach for the first time he made me feel real,” Gonzalez said, reflecting on his early interactions with Jaissle.
