Actor Nicolas Cage is facing an unexpected challenge as a large sinkhole threatens his oceanfront residence in Malibu, California. The sinkhole, which opened on September 8 near Cage’s home on Sea Level Drive, has caused significant damage, swallowing the actor’s driveway and prompting the city to issue evacuation orders for the area.
City records indicate that Cage has secured four permits totaling $3,158 to carry out repair work on the property. The approved repairs include excavation for soil sampling, debris removal, and installation of sandbags aimed at protecting the home against ongoing coastal erosion and strong wave activity. These permits are among 14 granted to residents along Sea Level Drive over the past two months, as the community grapples with the aftereffects of high tides and rainfall linked to Tropical Storm Marie.
The situation on Sea Level Drive has left the neighborhood in a precarious state. The sinkhole’s depth measures approximately 25 feet, leading the city of Malibu to red-tag 31 homes on the street and enforce evacuations. This action stems from damage that has rendered the only access road to the coastal enclave impassable. Utilities, including gas and power lines, have been shut off as a precaution, and the road remains closed to all vehicles. The timeline for lifting evacuation orders remains uncertain.
The repair process has encountered setbacks. The original contractor responsible for addressing the sinkhole was dismissed, with a new contractor taking over in early October. Responsibility for the repairs lies with the Sea Level Drive Homeowners Association, according to city officials.
The sinkhole’s emergence comes amid growing concerns in Malibu over escalating coastal erosion and extreme weather events. The city declared a state of emergency on October 7 as a precautionary measure, referencing the potential impact of El Niño conditions. Mayor Bruce Silverstein highlighted the city’s historical experience with severe storms tied to El Niño and noted that effects are already being observed.
Residents of Malibu are weighing their options amid the uncertainty. One local has expressed intentions to relocate, while another is seeking information about insurance coverage for sinkhole damage. Cage, who purchased the property earlier this year for $10.5 million, owns a modern four-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home spanning nearly 4,000 square feet near Lechuza Point. The house features a rooftop deck with a hot tub and has gained attention in part due to Cage’s profile as an award-winning actor, including an Oscar and Golden Globe for the 1995 film “Leaving Las Vegas.” His recent projects include the films “Pig” and “Spider-Noir.”
