Known for his gritty and visually striking movies such as *Drive* and *The Neon Demon*, Refn recounted how the ordeal reinvigorated his creative passion and shaped the narrative of his new project.
Refn’s health crisis began during the summer of 2023 while working on a campaign for Prada in Italy. Experiencing unusual fatigue and noted by his daughter for his paleness, he initially attributed his condition to overwork. However, after returning to his home in Copenhagen, a medical examination revealed a severely damaged heart valve leaking blood into his lungs—a condition that left him “essentially dying,” according to the director.
He was advised to undergo open heart surgery within two weeks and faced a choice between a metal or pig valve replacement. Initially, the thought of a traditional open chest operation was daunting, but Refn’s surgeon offered an alternative: telescopic surgery, a minimally invasive procedure that avoided opening his ribcage. This option, described by Refn as a form of “divine intervention,” convinced him he had not yet reached the end of his life or creative journey.
Throughout the operation, Refn requested that the procedure be filmed, a request initially declined but later approved by medical staff given his status.
