Since its founding in 2013 by Nidhi Pant and six university colleagues, S4S Technologies has focused on addressing food waste, rural poverty, and gender inequality within India’s farming sector. The company develops solar-powered dehydrators designed to preserve produce without relying on electricity, enabling smallholder farmers to extend the shelf life of their crops and reduce losses caused by adverse weather, deformities, or market fluctuations.

Prior to the introduction of these dehydrators, approximately 30 percent of harvested crops were lost, significantly impacting the incomes of rural farmers. By using solar energy to dry fruits and vegetables, farmers can sell a larger proportion of their harvest, ensuring greater financial stability.

S4S Technologies’ innovation has had a notable social impact, particularly for women in agriculture. The initiative has supported sustainable income generation for nearly 300,000 rural women across 400 villages, contributing to improved economic opportunities and reduced gender disparities in these areas.

In recognition of this work, Nidhi Pant received the Earthshot Prize in 2023, and since its establishment, the company has helped prevent an estimated 60,000 tonnes of food waste. Additionally, by reducing reliance on conventional preservation methods and food loss, S4S Technologies has contributed to averting approximately 300,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, aligning the enterprise with broader environmental sustainability goals.

The solar-powered dehydrators continue to offer a scalable, eco-friendly solution to challenges faced by marginalized farming communities, promoting greater resilience and empowerment through technological innovation.
