Joaquin Niemann delivered a strong finish at the 2026 U.S. Open on Sunday, overcoming a turbulent start to secure a tie for seventh place at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The 27-year-old Chilean, a LIV Golf competitor, posted a four-under-par 66 in the final round, the lowest score of the day, concluding the tournament at one over par for the week.
Niemann’s performance was particularly notable given his difficult beginning. During the completion of his first round on Friday morning, he recorded a seven-over-par 11 on the par-4 sixth hole, including two out-of-bounds shots and a two-stroke penalty for throwing his sand wedge in frustration. Despite this setback, he rebounded with a five-under-par 65 in his second round, comfortably making the cut and positioning himself for a strong finish.
Reflecting on his final round, Niemann said he aimed to deliver a low score inspired by Tommy Fleetwood’s 63 at the 2018 U.S. Open, also held at Shinnecock Hills. “I was focusing on trying to hit 63, trying my best,” Niemann said. “Ended up just short, but really happy with the round today.” He acknowledged that aside from the mishap on the sixth hole, he was pleased with his overall play.
Finishing in the top 10 secured Niemann an automatic invitation to the 2027 U.S. Open. Had he parred the disastrous sixth hole in the first round instead of the costly triple-bogey, Niemann would have been six under for the tournament, which would likely have been enough to claim the championship.
Niemann’s steady recovery after a rough start highlighted his resilience and ability to compete among the sport’s elite, capping a week that for many appeared nearly lost after the early setback.
