Nigella Lawson has joined the panel of judges for the latest season of The Great British Bake Off, bringing a fresh dynamic to the popular baking competition as it returns to Channel 4. The show’s launch event took place on Monday, ahead of the series premiere scheduled for Tuesday, September 22 at 8 p.m.
Replacing longtime judge Prue Leith, Lawson emphasized her approach to judging as empathetic and constructive. She said she prefers to highlight contestants’ strengths alongside areas that need improvement, aiming to provide honest yet encouraging feedback. Lawson candidly shared the emotional difficulty she experiences during eliminations, admitting she often avoids eye contact to manage the stress of decision-making. She stressed the importance of thorough consideration before sending any baker home, acknowledging the stakes involved despite it being a competition focused on cake.
Joining Lawson at the event were fellow judge Paul Hollywood and co-hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding. Hollywood described the moment when Lawson delivered her first critiques inside the tent as “magical” and spoke to the close-knit nature of this year’s group of 12 contestants. “It was quite emotional,” he noted, adding that the bakers’ personalities resonated deeply with him during the filming process.
The new season introduces a fresh challenge in which contestants receive assistance from their friends and family members. Fielding humorously recounted the chaotic atmosphere this created, mentioning that some interactions even escalated into what he called “proper full-on fights,” adding an unpredictable element to the competition.
Alison Hammond praised Lawson’s seamless integration into the Bake Off environment, highlighting her natural ease with both the bakers and the cameras. “She didn’t need any advice whatsoever,” Hammond said. “She was magical with the bakers – and in front of the camera.”
The Great British Bake Off’s return marks a new phase for the show, with Lawson’s presence expected to bring a distinctive voice and warmth to the judging panel. The series will air on Channel 4, continuing to showcase the talents of amateur bakers nationwide.
