Night Raider delivered a strong performance to claim victory in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock, securing a notable win for trainer Karl Burke. The event faced initial disruption when Friendly Soul was pulled up after encountering a pothole in the opening race, prompting officials to move the Temple Stakes to the inner track and delay the start by an hour.

Despite a slow beginning that prevented Night Raider from establishing his customary front-running position, jockey Billy Lee guided the bay gelding into contention. Making a decisive move two furlongs from the finish by switching to the right, Night Raider overtook Jakajaro inside the final furlong. He maintained momentum to finish a length ahead of Jim Goldie’s American Affair, who started at 10/1. Beautiful Diamond, with odds of 28/1, completed the podium in third place.

Burke also secured a Group 2 double at Haydock courtesy of Venetian Sun, the 7/4 favorite in the Sandy Lane Stakes. After a disappointing effort over a mile in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, where she was unplaced, Venetian Sun demonstrated a clear preference for sprint distances. Dropping back to six furlongs, the filly, again ridden by Lee, took control a furlong out and extended her lead to finish three lengths ahead of Division, the 15/8 second favorite.

Following her convincing win, Venetian Sun’s prospects at Royal Ascot have improved, and she is now considered a general 5-2 chance for the upcoming Commonwealth Cup. The two victories underline Karl Burke’s success with sprinters this season and highlight both Night Raider and Venetian Sun as horses to watch at the highest level.
