A yearlong investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department into a series of organized train cargo thefts culminated in the arrest of nine individuals with alleged connections to the Sinaloa cartel. Authorities executed a search warrant on October 16 at a residence on East 35th Street in San Bernardino, seizing more than $300,000 in stolen goods, firearms, cash, and vehicles believed to be involved in the crimes.

The suspects, all from Sinaloa, Mexico, were identified as Jose Navarrete, 24; Brian Iran Fontes-Carrillo, 27; Mauro Ruiz-Medina, 30; Pastor Pena-Lerma, 43; Alfredo Covarrubias-Navarrete, 24; Jose Alfredo Castillo-Baca, 24; Jose Ismael Palafox-Bernal, 18; Cesar Daniel Navarrete-Martinez, 31; and Cristian Erubiel Navarrete-Zapien, 23. The Sheriff’s Department alleges their involvement in burglarizing Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway trains, resulting in significant theft losses.

During the operation, investigators recovered approximately $333,000 in retail merchandise, including JBL speakers, Logitech computer equipment, Victoria’s Secret products, Nike and New Balance footwear, as well as Husky tools. Law enforcement also seized four semiautomatic handguns, a drone used for surveillance, tools purportedly utilized to break into cargo containers, a large quantity of cash, fentanyl, and four vehicles allegedly used to facilitate the thefts.

The Sheriff’s Department has charged all nine suspects with conspiracy to commit theft of railroad property and possession of a controlled substance while armed. Officials have not elaborated on the specific nature of the suspects’ ties to the Sinaloa cartel but identified the group as linked to the criminal organization. The investigation marks a significant step in addressing the ongoing problem of organized cargo theft in the region.
