A journalist was fatally shot on Friday in Oaxaca state, southern Mexico, marking the ninth journalist killed in the country this year, according to the human rights organization Article 19.

Humarubi Huesca Manzano, who owned the news website Pinotepa Comunica, was attacked by an armed group while accompanied by two other men, the state prosecutor’s office reported. Huesca Manzano sustained gunshot wounds from the attack and later died. His website covered political and local news in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the city where he lived. In addition to his work in journalism, he also worked as a taxi driver.

The death of Huesca Manzano adds to a troubling pattern of violence against journalists in Mexico, where reporters frequently face threats, intimidation, and attacks related to their work. Organizations tracking press freedom note that violence against media workers continues to undermine the ability of independent journalism to operate freely and safely within the country.

The authorities are investigating the incident, though impunity remains a significant issue in many cases involving attacks on journalists in Mexico.
