A 68-year-old man from New Jersey was charged Monday with attempting to rob three banks in downtown Boston within a span of 27 minutes on Saturday. Anthony Matarazzo was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court’s central division on a single count of armed robbery and pleaded not guilty, according to court records.
Matarazzo was ordered held without bail at the Suffolk County Jail, with the court setting a $250,000 cash bail that he did not post. He is scheduled to appear again in court on November 23 for a hearing.
According to the police, Matarazzo’s first alleged attempt occurred at East West Bank on Harrison Avenue at 12:17 p.m. He reportedly passed a note to a bank employee demanding $200 in cash. The employee declined to comply, and Matarazzo left the premises after a few minutes.
Approximately 21 minutes later, officers responded to a report of another attempted robbery at Cathay Bank on Washington Street. There, a man handed a bank employee a note also demanding $200 in cash and claimed to be armed with a firearm. The employee complied, and the suspect left with an undisclosed sum of money.
Just six minutes following the second incident, police were called to the Bank of America branch at 630 Washington Street on a reported robbery. Officers located a man matching the description from the earlier robberies and took Matarazzo into custody. At the time of his arrest, he was found carrying some cash and a note but was not in possession of a firearm.
Police circulated a photograph and description of the suspect after the first attempted robbery, leading to a coordinated response across downtown Boston. Authorities have not disclosed whether the cash Matarazzo carried upon arrest was connected to the robbery at Cathay Bank.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare for the next phase of legal proceedings.
