Nadya al-Saleh, acting deputy director of Learning and Outreach at the NMoQ and director of the ExxonMobil STEAM Festival, emphasized the initiative’s goal to encourage youth in Qatar to pursue scientific fields.

The session featured Nayla al-Naema, environmental and biodiversity lead at ExxonMobil Research Qatar (EMRQ), who discussed her professional journey and current research utilizing eDNA. This genetic material, left by organisms in their habitats, allows scientists to monitor species and ecosystems in innovative ways. Al-Naema shared insights from her studies of Qatar’s marine environment, including investigations of local coral species and the application of advanced technologies to assess how marine life responds to changing environmental conditions.

“The first speaker today was from ExxonMobil,” al-Saleh said, highlighting that the discussion helped participants understand the practical aspects of scientific work. The format included a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session, enabling attendees to engage directly with a practicing researcher.

Cafe Scientifique aims to bridge the gap between classroom science and real-world application by allowing young people aged 16 and older to connect with professionals across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) disciplines.
