Matt Clifford, a former government adviser, has joined Anthropic, an artificial intelligence start-up, to head its international policy team. The company, known for developing the Claude chatbot, announced that Clifford will be responsible for managing its interactions with governments outside North America.

Clifford’s previous roles include serving as an AI adviser to Sir Keir Starmer and representing Rishi Sunak at the 2023 AI safety summit held at Bletchley Park. Drawing on this experience, he emphasized the increasing demand from countries to have greater influence over how artificial intelligence technologies are developed and regulated. Clifford stated that his aim is to position Anthropic as a collaborative partner with governments across Europe, Asia, and other regions.
