Brisbane’s hopes of defending their premiership this season have suffered a significant setback after suffering an eighth consecutive defeat, losing 28-16 to Cronulla at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night. The Sharks’ winger Sione Katoa scored a hat-trick, maintaining Cronulla’s bid for a top-four finish while deepening Brisbane’s crisis.
The loss extended Brisbane’s losing streak to eight matches and marked their fifth straight defeat in front of a home crowd of 38,998. With only eight matches left in the regular season, the Broncos now face the daunting prospect of needing to win them all just to reach the finals in 2026. Since the introduction of the compulsory grand final era in 1954, no team has ever made the finals after losing eight consecutive games in a season.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire remained cautiously optimistic despite the poor run. “Why not?” he said when asked about their chances of reaching the finals. “I’ve got a lot of belief in the team. We’re getting a lot of blokes getting experience and a lot coming back over the next couple of weeks. That’s the reason I believe.”
Brisbane’s injury list has played a considerable role in their struggles. Adding to their woes, forward Brendan Piakura suffered another concussion during the match. In response, Maguire has introduced reserve-grade players such as Luke Gale and Josh Coric to gain first-grade experience during this challenging period.
The Broncos rallied late in the game, trimming the deficit to 22-16 with five minutes remaining. However, an error by stand-in captain Kotoni Staggs, who dropped a routine pass, allowed Cronulla’s Braydon Trindall to run 65 meters for a match-sealing try. Maguire acknowledged the team’s effort but stressed the need for learning. “They’re working hard to get the result, the fight and effort is tremendous,” he commented. “A lot of our players are learning what it takes to become a winning side.”
The Broncos will benefit from a bye next weekend before facing a series of challenging matches against top-eight teams including Penrith, North Queensland, Newcastle, and the Dolphins. The return of key players such as Payne Haas, Pat Carrigan, Reece Walsh, Adam Reynolds, Ezra Mam, Josiah Karapani, and Billy Walters should bolster the lineup. However, Brisbane will need significant improvement and strategic adjustments from Maguire to salvage the remainder of their campaign.
Concerns about the team’s discipline and effort continue to mount. Former player Michael Ennis publicly criticized Gehamat Shibasaki’s inability to prevent one of Katoa’s tries, pointing to a lack of urgency. The Broncos have been noted as one of the most ill-disciplined teams this season, with errors and lapses in focus undermining their performances. Maguire hinted that bold changes, potentially sidelining established players, might be necessary moving forward.
With their premiership defence in jeopardy, Brisbane’s challenge now is to reverse their fortunes quickly to avoid a further fall down the ladder.
