The state cabinet committee on infrastructure, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has approved revisions to the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 project, a significant urban transit initiative valued at approximately ₹18,130.55 crore. The approval was granted during a meeting held on Wednesday in Mumbai.

The updated plan divides the original Line 5 into two segments, designated as Lines 5 and 5A, extending the metro corridor to include Bhoirwadi and Ulhasnagar. The combined length of these lines will span 34.21 kilometers and encompass 19 stations. Phase 1 of the project will cover the stretch from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, followed by Phase 2 from Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi. Line 5A will subsequently extend the network from Durgadi to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. This extension aims to serve an estimated population of 6.9 million residents across the Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar regions.

In addition to the metro project modifications, the committee reviewed and approved other major infrastructure schemes targeted for completion within six years. These include the Nagpur-Gondia Expressway, measuring 162.577 kilometers and estimated at ₹19,582.19 crore; the Bhandara-Gadchiroli Expressway at 94.241 kilometers, with ₹931.15 crore allocated for land acquisition; and the Nagpur-Chandrapur Expressway spanning 204.799 kilometers, requiring ₹2,353.94 crore for land acquisition.

Further directives were issued concerning the preparatory activities for the upcoming Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a major religious event. The committee sanctioned expenditures totaling ₹1,063 crore to facilitate necessary infrastructure and logistical arrangements for the festival.
