Veteran Australian actress Noni Hazlehurst is returning to the Space Theatre at the Adelaide Festival Centre to star in the one-woman play *The Lark*, marking a poignant homecoming in her extensive career. Hazlehurst, who first performed at the venue in 1974 during a production of *The Fantasticks* directed by her Flinders University drama professor Wal Cherry, described the space as a "cultural, iconic place" that holds significant personal and professional meaning.
Now 75, Hazlehurst takes on the role of Rose, the central character in playwright Daniel Keene’s work. Rose is a former publican saying goodbye to a hotel that is scheduled for demolition—an establishment where she was born, lived, and worked. Hazlehurst views the role as a unique opportunity to portray ordinary people with depth and nuance. “He’s a poet, he writes the most beautiful imagery, but these characters aren’t poets, so I have to walk that tightrope between giving the images their justice, but still being an ordinary person,” she said.
Reflecting on her diverse career, Hazlehurst cites her performance in the television series *A Place to Call Home* as a notable highlight. She expressed gratitude for the privilege of embodying complex characters like Rose, emphasizing their representation of everyday life and the universality of their experiences.
*The Lark* is scheduled to run at Space Theatre through to July 5, offering audiences a chance to experience this intimate and evocative production.
