England winger Noni Madueke has expressed confidence that the national team will be well prepared for the possibility of a penalty shoot-out as they progress in the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions are set to face DR Congo on July 1 in Atlanta in their first knockout-round match, where the pressure of spot-kicks may become a deciding factor.
England’s history in major tournaments includes several high-profile penalty shoot-out losses, notably to Italy in the Euro 2020 final and in the 1998 and 2006 World Cups. Acknowledging this challenging legacy, England manager Tomas Tuchel has emphasized the importance of preparing his players for shoot-outs and has been alerting the squad ahead of the match.
Madueke, who experienced a heartbreaking penalty defeat with Arsenal in the Champions League final earlier this year, said the team is approaching all phases of play with seriousness, particularly as the tournament moves into knockout stages. He stated that he is more than willing to step up and take a penalty if called upon and highlighted that the final decision rests with the coach.
“All phases of play were taken extremely seriously. As you go into knockout football, it’s something that becomes more prominent in the games,” Madueke said. “I’d volunteer, for sure. I am always open to take a penalty. At the end of the day, it comes down to the coach’s decision. But if that’s what he wants and what he thinks is best for the team, from my side, I’m always ready.”
Beyond penalty shoot-outs, Madueke said he has carried the confidence gained from Arsenal’s recent title success into the World Cup. The Arsenal winger pointed to the tournament’s importance and intensity, emphasizing his focus on performing at his best as the stakes increase.
He added, “The winning feeling lingers. It’s great to take that into a tournament as big and as prominent as the World Cup and it definitely feeds your confidence.”
England’s upcoming clash with DR Congo will provide a crucial test as they look to navigate the later stages of the competition, with mental and technical readiness for penalties potentially proving decisive.
