Victory Gardens Theater is set to resume in-person productions at the Biograph Theatre in September with the world premiere of “The Humanities,” a new play by playwright and Northwestern University professor Zayd Ayers Dohrn. The production will mark the company’s return to its historic home at 2433 N. Lincoln Avenue after a period of inactivity dating to the pandemic and internal disputes.

Directed by Eddie Torres, the play features an all-Chicago cast led by former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Nora Dunn. The ensemble also includes Al’Jaleel McGhee, Steve Pickering, Isa Arciniegas, Daniil Krimer, DeVaughn Asante Loman, Piper Murphy, William Anthony Sebastian Rose II, and Sabine Wan. The run is scheduled to begin on September 10 and will run through October 4, with Victory Gardens describing the engagement as “very limited.”

“The Humanities” explores the fallout following the invitation of a controversial speaker to deliver a lecture at an elite American university. The production contains themes of sexual content and partial nudity. Dohrn, who is the son of noted radicals Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers, has previously gained attention for his work on “Revolution(s),” a musical with a score by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, which was staged last fall at the Goodman Theatre and is currently under consideration for Broadway.

Victory Gardens, which owns the Biograph Theatre, had paused its regular programming amid challenges that included a dispute with a former artistic director and tensions with affiliated artists. The theater company held a fundraising event earlier this year as part of its efforts to return to steady theatrical production. Porchlight Music Theatre is also scheduled to present shows at the Biograph in the coming season.

This production marks a significant step in Victory Gardens Theater’s plans to re-establish its presence in Chicago’s theatrical landscape following a challenging hiatus.
