Anna Nordqvist is nearing the final selection of Team Europe’s roster for the upcoming Solheim Cup, with players outside the automatic qualification spots making their last bids at this week’s AIG Women’s Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes. The event represents a crucial opportunity for those seeking to secure a place on the team ahead of the biennial competition, scheduled to take place from September 11 to 13 at Bernardus Golf Club in the Netherlands.
The Solheim Cup captain has been closely monitoring contenders’ performances, including at the ISPS Handa Scottish Open, where Germany’s Esther Henseleit emerged as the top European finisher in fourth place. The tournament was won by South Korea’s Jenny Shin, who ended a decade-long wait for a title on the Ladies European Tour (LET) by edging compatriot Kim A-lim by two strokes.
Under the current qualification system, the top two players in the LET Solheim Cup standings automatically qualify, followed by the next six highest-ranked players in the world rankings who have not already qualified. Nordqvist retains four captain’s picks to finalize her team, while the United States captain, Angela Stanford, has three picks at her disposal.
Nordqvist, who has won three major championships and is a four-time Solheim Cup winner as a player, brings significant experience to her role. At 39, she remains an active competitor and maintains regular communication with players and caddies. She has acknowledged the speculation surrounding her selections but emphasized the challenge she faces in assembling the strongest possible squad to challenge the Americans. “I don’t think the players realize just how involved I am,” she said. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to put together the best team to beat the Americans.”
The captain’s journey has not been without personal difficulties. Following a bitter divorce in 2024 and the sudden death of her former husband, Nordqvist has described the period as extremely taxing, both mentally and emotionally. “I’ve been to hell and back but I’ve rebuilt my life and am in a much better spot now,” she reflected. Despite the demands of the role, she remains passionate about the event and credits her support team for helping her navigate the challenges.
Ahead of the championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes, Nordqvist held a team practice session at Bernardus Golf Club, a course she compared to Walton Heath, highlighting the importance of precision shots on raised greens and the strategic handling of water hazards.
Several players remain in contention for the remaining spots on the European side, including LET standings leader Helen Briem of Germany and others ranked highly in the world, such as Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Leona Maguire, Julia López Ramírez, Mimi Rhodes, and Ingrid Lindblad. Europe will be aiming to reclaim the Solheim Cup from the United States in September, with Nordqvist carefully considering her options in the weeks ahead.
