North Attleborough secured a narrow 28-27 victory over No. 6 Mansfield on Friday in a pivotal Hockomock League contest, thanks to a late surge led by quarterback Nathaniel Robin. The junior, who had attempted only one pass through the first three quarters, completed three crucial throws during the winning drive in the final 12 minutes to clinch the upset.
With the game tied at 21, Robin first connected with Joseph Ruggiero on a 32-yard pass on third-and-long. He then completed a seven-yard pass to Ryan Gustafson on fourth down, extending the drive. The decisive score came when Robin rolled out to his left and found Milo House for a 13-yard touchdown with six minutes remaining, putting North Attleborough ahead 28-21.
The Red Rocketeers’ defense held firm in the closing minutes, stopping Mansfield from converting a potential game-winning two-point attempt with 80 seconds left on the clock. North Attleborough (3-2, 2-1 Hockomock) thereby dealt Mansfield (5-1, 1-1) its first loss of the season and gained an important advantage in the Hockomock Davenport standings and Division 3 power rankings.
Coach Mike Strachan praised Robin’s leadership and determination, describing him as “a gamer” and “our heart.” The coach noted the quarterback’s resilience in a high-pressure game situation.
Mansfield entered the contest with a strong defensive record, having allowed only 22 points during their first five games. However, North Attleborough’s offense found success against the previously stout Hornet defense, finishing with 427 total yards. The Red Rocketeers’ ground game featured a dominant performance from Robin and Ruggiero, who combined for 365 rushing yards—Robin with 246 and Ruggiero adding 119.
North Attleborough scored three lengthy touchdowns in the first half, each covering at least 49 yards. Ruggiero opened the scoring with a 49-yard run, while Robin contributed touchdown runs of 82 and 59 yards.
After the game, Robin expressed satisfaction with the team’s effort and the victory, saying, “It feels great to get back above .500. This team played great and I’m very proud of them.”
