The University of North Carolina football program is facing significant challenges following a controversial overhaul that began in late 2024. Key figures in the state’s leadership, including UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts and former UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees chairman John Preyer, spearheaded the hiring of former NFL coach Bill Belichick and former NFL executive Michael Lombardi in an ambitious attempt to revitalize the team. However, nearly 20 months later, the program’s performance and organizational stability have fallen short of expectations.
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach with the New England Patriots, and Lombardi, who had not worked in the NFL since 2016, were brought in with contracts totaling $30 million guaranteed to Belichick, along with substantial name, image, and likeness (NIL) incentives for both. The new leadership sought to rebuild the roster aggressively, signing 70 new players in 2025 and another 60 in 2026, aiming to establish UNC as what they called the "33rd team" worthy of NFL consideration. However, the team managed only four wins in the most recent seasons, including just two Atlantic Coast Conference victories against Stanford and Syracuse, the latter fielding a lacrosse player at quarterback due to roster issues. UNC also experienced rare losses to in-state rivals Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest in the same season for the first time since 1989.
Trouble extended beyond on-field struggles. On July 27, 2026, Lombardi was suspended following an alleged human resources complaint made by a former UNC front office employee, further exacerbating concerns about leadership and internal operations. The same period saw scrutiny on the hiring process and decision-making, with criticism aimed at Roberts and Preyer for sidelining Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham, who reportedly preferred to hire former Iowa State coach Matt Campbell.
Sources familiar with the situation have raised questions about the due diligence conducted before the appointments. Some point to the lack of support for Belichick and Lombardi within NFL circles, noting Belichick’s difficulty in securing an NFL coaching position despite his record and Lombardi’s prior dismissal from a general manager role after just over a year. Additionally, the involvement of Jordan Hudson, a 24-year-old former beauty pageant contestant described as Belichick’s “muse,” drew attention and added to perceptions of instability surrounding the leadership.
Preyer stepped down from his board position in January 2026, leaving Roberts with the ongoing challenges of managing the program’s public perception and on-field progress. University officials have yet to publicly comment on the internal matters or provide a clear roadmap for improvement.
As UNC continues its rebuild under Belichick’s leadership, stakeholders and fans remain cautious. While the current football team’s performance has been disappointing, the program’s future heavily depends on whether the coaching staff can convert their extensive NFL experience into sustained success at the collegiate level.
