Northamptonshire secured a seven-wicket victory over Gloucestershire on the final day of their County Championship Division Two match at Northampton. The win saw Northamptonshire accumulate 23 points, while Gloucestershire remained on 3 points.
Northamptonshire posted a commanding first-innings total of 465, largely thanks to significant contributions from Saif Zaib, who scored 142, and N A McSweeney, who added 117. Additional support came from L Guthrie and J J G Sales, who scored 52 and 50 runs respectively. Gloucestershire’s K D C Clarke was the most successful bowler, claiming six wickets for 109 runs.
In reply, Gloucestershire managed 268 in their first innings, with G L van Buuren top-scoring with 76 and J R Bracey contributing 72. Northamptonshire’s L Guthrie took four wickets for 50 runs. Following on, Gloucestershire resumed their second innings at 264 for seven. Bracey led a fightback with an unbeaten 148, supported by D J Ahmed’s 40. However, the team was eventually bowled out for 387.
Northamptonshire reached the target of 191 runs with the loss of three wickets in 33.5 overs. R Vasconcelos led the chase with 33 runs before being dismissed by M D Taylor. C G Harrison remained unbeaten on 92, while McSweeney and N A Zaib scored 21 and 34 not out, respectively. Bowling figures for Gloucestershire were spread, with M D Taylor, Ahmed, and Williams each taking a wicket.
The match was marked by competitive batting performances from both sides, but Northamptonshire’s strong first innings and effective bowling underpinned their victory. The result keeps Northamptonshire well-positioned in the Division Two standings as the season progresses.
