Durham moved closer to securing promotion to Division One of the County Championship after their promotion rivals Northamptonshire collapsed dramatically at Wantage Road. Chasing a target of 204 to claim the second promotion spot, Northamptonshire were bowled out for just 50 runs, registering their fifth lowest total in first-class cricket history. The innings was dismantled by slow left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson, who took six wickets for 20 runs.

Earlier in the match, Durham’s second innings was wrapped up by India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who claimed five wickets, including a rapid three-wicket burst on the fourth morning. Chahal ended the match with figures of nine for 120. Parkinson then took the new ball and quickly tore through Northamptonshire’s batting lineup, with all ten wickets falling within 22.2 overs on the final day, a collapse compounded by some poor shot selection from the visitors.

Meanwhile, Kent overtook Northamptonshire to claim second place in Division Two following their 84-run victory over Worcestershire at Canterbury. Kent’s bowling attack, led by Matt Milnes, Hasan Mahmud, and Keith Dudgeon, all contributed three wickets apiece to restrict Worcestershire.

In Division One, Sussex confirmed their survival hopes with a 47-run win over Essex at Chelmsford. James Coles, recently called up to England’s T20 squad for the series against Sri Lanka, was instrumental in the victory, taking the final wicket to complete match figures of seven for 105 and also scoring 79 runs in Sussex’s innings.

The loss leaves Hampshire in dire straits regarding relegation, while Essex’s defeat plunges them into a tight battle with Glamorgan, Surrey, Yorkshire, and Leicestershire to avoid being the second team relegated from Division One.
