A Northern California man sustained severe injuries after a homemade firework exploded in his hand while he was cleaning up debris from Fourth of July celebrations. Jason Turner was at Point St. George Beach when he found a shiny, round object, which detonated upon contact, causing significant damage to his left hand.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, but Turner's injuries were so severe that his left hand had to be amputated. In addition to the physical trauma to his hand, Turner suffered vision and hearing impairments as a result of the blast.
The Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident and believes the device was an approximately six-inch-long homemade firework that had been discarded on the beach. Authorities caution residents to avoid handling unknown objects, especially around holiday periods when such explosives are more commonly found.
Turner’s family described the accident as a devastating turn of events, noting that what began as a simple act of kindness—cleaning up litter to help the community—ended in a life-altering injury. In response to the medical expenses and ongoing care Turner will require, his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking $40,000. As of now, about $23,000 has been raised from donors supporting the effort.
Local officials and community members have expressed concern over the dangers posed by illegal or homemade fireworks, urging residents to exercise caution and report any suspicious objects to authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
