A Northern California man was seriously injured after confronting a gunman during a mass shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, earlier this week. Austin James, an Antelope High School graduate and former Twin Falls police officer, was waiting in the restaurant’s drive-thru with his wife when the attack occurred.

According to family members, rather than fleeing, James attempted to intervene and stop the shooter. During the confrontation, he was shot in the arm and sustained serious injuries. His wife, an emergency room nurse, provided immediate assistance and helped transport him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The shooting left three people dead and seven others injured, including James. Authorities identified the gunman as 24-year-old Chad Williams, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Investigators have not released a motive for the attack but suspect Williams acted alone.

Among the three fatalities was Ashley Garibay, a manager from Stockton, California. Garibay had traveled to Twin Falls as part of a team assisting with employee training at the restaurant’s newly opened location.

As of Sunday afternoon, local officials reported that two victims remained in critical condition while three others were listed as stable. Two additional victims had already been treated and released from the hospital.

James previously attended Antelope High School, where he played volleyball, before pursuing higher education at Brigham Young University in Utah. His family has described his actions as courageous in the face of the violent event at the restaurant.
