Bury’s Anthony Johnson, who has prior promotion success with Radcliffe and Salford, returns to the NPL Premier with hopes of guiding Bury back to Step 2 after the club topped the NPL West last term. FC United of Manchester, despite losing star player Jay Fitzmartin to Hednesford, remain contenders, bolstered by the arrival of Niall Watson. Stockton Town, after two consecutive top-five finishes, are optimistic about finally securing promotion.
Several clubs, including Ashton United, Guiseley, Hyde United, and Warrington Town, have highlighted ambitions for significant improvement. Bridlington Town, under Scott Kerr since early 2026, have shown a marked improvement, while Northern League champions Guisborough Town are also drawing attention as potential challengers.
At Leek Town, young manager Josh Brehaut approaches the new season with cautious optimism. Having taken over as manager midway through 2023 and guiding the club to the NPL West title in his first season, Brehaut has stabilized Leek in the Premier Division with finishes of 15th and then eighth in the subsequent two campaigns. The club narrowly missed out on playoff qualification last year by five points.
Brehaut credits strong support from the club’s board and his assistant, Wayne Goodison, for his development as a manager. Reflecting on the challenges faced, he emphasized the importance of learning from setbacks amid a demanding environment.
Looking ahead, Brehaut acknowledges the competitiveness of the division and the shared ambitions among clubs targeting a top-seven finish. In response, Leek Town have strengthened their squad with several signings, including defenders Jack Stafford and Ben Hockenhull from Curzon Ashton and Nantwich Town, respectively, attacking midfielder Jack Griffiths from Chorley, and forwards Alex Panter and Zak Emmerson from Nantwich and FC Halifax Town.
Panter’s rapid ascent through the non-league ranks, marked by 26 goals last season, and Emmerson’s pedigree as a former England U18 international, bring optimism to Leek’s attacking options. Brehaut views these acquisitions as significant milestones for the club, reflecting its growing appeal and ambition at this level.
