Northumberland moved to the top of the Eastern Division One table in the National Counties Cricket Association (NCCA) Championship following an eight-wicket victory over Buckinghamshire at Benwell Hill. The match marked Buckinghamshire’s first defeat in their defense of the title.

After narrowly missing out on victory against Suffolk in their opening match of the season, Northumberland secured a decisive win by bowling Buckinghamshire out for 175 in their second innings and successfully chasing a target of 221. The chase was anchored by former Durham batter Sol Bell, who carried his bat to an unbeaten 106 from 155 deliveries, hitting 11 fours. Bell’s century was supported by fellow ex-Durham player Harry Crawshaw, who scored 38, while Jonny Bushnell remained 57 not out to guide Northumberland home.

Spin bowling proved crucial for Northumberland, with slow left-arm bowlers Oli McGee and Joe Stuart dismantling Buckinghamshire’s batting lineup. McGee took 4 wickets for 25 runs, and Stuart claimed 3 for 43. Despite a resilient half-century from Ewan Cox, Buckinghamshire’s last six wickets fell for only 33 runs.

Buckinghamshire captain Conner Haddow and Ed Bragg forged a significant ninth-wicket stand of 76 on the second day, briefly stabilizing their innings. Bragg remained unbeaten on 57, and Haddow contributed 42 runs before falling to Bushnell, who finished with a career-best six wickets for 88 runs in the innings. Bushnell also claimed early wickets, including those of Archie Dodds and Ewan Cox. Dodds had earlier stood firm with a 69 not out, resisting Northumberland’s bowling attack for nearly three hours.

After being dismissed for 212 in the first innings, Northumberland built a modest lead of 45 runs. Buckinghamshire extended the advantage to 62 on the second day before McGee claimed Dodds’ wicket late in the session.

With this result, Northumberland climbed to the summit of the Eastern Division One standings, edging one point ahead of Staffordshire and two clear of Buckinghamshire. The victory highlighted Northumberland’s effective use of spin bowling and strong top-order partnerships, setting them as serious contenders in the championship this season.
