Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday after being convicted of multiple charges, including rape. The Oslo District Court found Høiby guilty of two counts of rape out of four charges brought against him, while acquitting him on the remaining two. In addition to the rape convictions, he was also found guilty of assault and abuse within close relationships.
Høiby, 29, faced a total of 40 criminal charges related to incidents involving four women that occurred between 2018 and 2024. Alongside the rape allegations, the charges included various offenses such as assault, drug-related crimes, and violations of restraining orders. While he denied the rape accusations, Høiby acknowledged responsibility for several of the lesser offenses during the trial.
Prosecutors had sought a sentence of seven years and seven months, arguing for a more severe punishment, whereas Høiby’s defense team recommended acquittal on the rape charges and proposed a maximum sentence of 18 months for the admitted offenses. The court’s decision to impose a four-year prison term reflects a compromise between those positions.
In addition to the prison sentence, Høiby was ordered to provide financial compensation to the victims. The court’s ruling comes amid significant public attention, given Høiby’s ties to Norway’s royal family. The case highlights ongoing legal and social concerns relating to violence and abuse within personal relationships.
