A group of Norwegian soccer fans attending the 2026 World Cup in the New York area brought notable enthusiasm to Wednesday’s New York Mets game at Citi Field. The fans occupied a designated section during the first game of the Mets-Cubs doubleheader, creating a lively atmosphere that energized the crowd at the ballpark.

The gathering was coordinated via Facebook, with the Mets providing tickets to the group in the same seating area. The Norwegian supporters had been in the region following their national team’s narrow 3-2 victory over Senegal on Monday night at MetLife Stadium, an event that marked a significant moment for the team’s World Cup campaign.

One attendee, identified as Kawar, described the experience as something new and unique, pointing out how baseball is not widely followed in Norway. Though the country has its own Norsk Baseballiga, comprising just six teams, the sport remains relatively niche in Scandinavia. Kawar noted that the atmosphere at Citi Field felt “very American in all ways.”

Some of the Norwegian fans initially needed 15 to 20 minutes to familiarize themselves with baseball rules before fully engaging with the game, highlighting the difference between the sport and those more familiar from television. Despite this learning curve, the group’s spirited presence quickly drew attention and contributed to lifting the energy of what was otherwise a relaxed afternoon contest.

An anonymous guest service employee at Citi Field praised the group’s enthusiasm and uniqueness, saying they stood out for their spirited support and camaraderie. The employee noted that while Norwegian fans have been well received throughout the baseball season, the sense of unity when the group chanted together provided a particularly special moment.

The Norwegians had gained widespread recognition during the World Cup for their coordinated chants, in particular their “Viking Ship” rowing chant, which they performed in high-profile locations including Times Square and MetLife Stadium. Their display at Citi Field served as another example of how the fans have brought a distinctive energy to events in the New York area during the tournament.
