Norwich City secured their first league victory of the season with a commanding 4-1 win over Burnley at Carrow Road on Saturday. Mo Toure and Andre Brooks each scored twice to help the Canaries dominate a Burnley side still reeling from recent setbacks, including relegation from the Premier League last season and an early Carabao Cup exit.
The match quickly turned in Norwich’s favor, with the home team taking a 3-0 lead within the opening 21 minutes. Anel Ahmedhodzic’s error allowed Toure to open the scoring just two minutes in, as he capitalized on a poor interception to slot home a low finish from 14 yards. Brooks followed with a second goal three minutes later, converting a cross from Anthony Musaba. Toure then added Norwich’s third when he pounced on a defensive mistake from Burnley captain Kyle Walker, who miscontrolled a corner delivery, leaving Toure free to execute a close-range finish.
Burnley managed to reduce the deficit in the 27th minute through a powerful 22-yard strike by Josh Laurent that deflected off the post and into the net. However, Norwich restored their three-goal cushion shortly after halftime. Brooks sealed the victory with a back-heel finish following a dynamic run by substitute Papa Amadou Diallo, culminating in a well-worked team move in the 67th minute.
Burnley’s afternoon worsened when Laurent was sent off in the 77th minute after receiving a second booking, leaving the visitors to finish the match with ten men. The defeat sparked a tense reaction among some Burnley supporters, who expressed frustration toward the team and manager Nicky Hayen after the final whistle.
Hayen acknowledged the challenges his squad faced early on and the disappointment among fans following last season’s relegation. “I know it’s really difficult after a season like last season — I know how disappointed they are. But you see that we have potential and we need time,” he said. He also admitted that the opening stages were problematic for Burnley, describing that period as “a disaster” despite the team’s initial energy.
Norwich head coach Philippe Clement praised his side's performance, highlighting their composure and tactical execution against a strong opponent. “A lot of positive things in the way the team played with the ball. How brave we were against their pressing, to break open their defensive line also and to score in the right moments. The way the boys moved, the way they found spaces against a good opponent, it’s a really positive evening for the club,” Clement said.
The result marked an encouraging start to Norwich’s campaign, while Burnley must regroup following a difficult run of form, including their relegation last season and recent cup exit.
