An NYPD officer has been charged with stealing a safe containing tens of thousands of dollars in cash and jewelry from his childhood friend’s apartment in the Bronx, according to court records and law enforcement sources.

Officer Luis Triunfel, 33, is accused of breaking into the friend’s Boynton Avenue residence shortly after midnight on August 31. Prosecutors say Triunfel took a shopping cart containing a metallic safe secured with a key lock. Inside the safe were approximately $9,500 in cash, $38,500 in gold jewelry, as well as the victim’s passport, car titles, U.S. permanent residency card, and Social Security card.

According to the complaint filed in Bronx Criminal Court, Triunfel returned to the Soundview apartment later the same day and damaged the surveillance system that had captured footage of the alleged incident. Additional charges allege that on September 3 and 7, Triunfel accessed NYPD databases to search for information related to the theft investigation.

The charges against Triunfel include burglary, grand larceny, tampering with physical evidence, and computer trespass. The NYPD announced the charges but did not provide further comment. Triunfel’s attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The case underscores concerns about potential abuse of police resources when officers are implicated in criminal conduct, as well as the breach of trust involved when the accused is connected personally to the victim. The investigation is ongoing.
