The City of Newcastle upon Tyne has announced two recent planning applications currently under consideration, with public comments invited until August 6, 2026. Details of the proposals and supporting documents are accessible online and at the City Library in Newcastle.
One significant application, submitted by Salamisso Developments, concerns the former Cemex site located east of King Edward VII Bridge and bounded by Pottery Lane and Skinnerburn Road. The proposal seeks permission to construct an eight-storey building designed to provide 405 bedrooms for student accommodation. The development would include communal facilities, a café classified under Class E, as well as associated landscaping and engineering works.
In a separate submission, Mr. Michael Lockwood has applied for listed building consent at 61 Lanesborough Court, Newcastle upon Tyne. The proposal involves external alterations to the property to allow installation of an electric vehicle (EV) charging point at the front of the building.
Members of the public wishing to comment on either application can do so online or by submitting written feedback to the Development Management team at the Civic Centre. Commentators are requested to include their name, address, and postcode, as anonymous responses will not be considered. All comments received will be scanned and made publicly available on the city’s planning portal.
Notably, if a householder application is refused and an appeal is subsequently lodged, all initial comments will be forwarded to the Secretary of State, and no additional responses will be accepted during the appeal phase.
The City of Newcastle upon Tyne continues to facilitate transparent public engagement in the planning process as development proposals move through formal review. Louise Sloan, Assistant Director Planning, oversees the administration of these applications.
