Senior Constable Bikash Bharati of the New South Wales Police has been honoured with the 2026 National Bravery Award in recognition of his courageous actions during a shooting incident in Sydney’s inner west. The award was presented by the Police Federation of Australia at a ceremony held in Canberra on Wednesday evening.
Sen-Constable Bharati, who is stationed at the Burwood Police Area Command, was among the first to respond to the shooting at Croydon Park on October 5. Despite coming under gunfire, he successfully directed a junior officer to safety and provided aid to an injured civilian.
The award acknowledges Sen-Constable Bharati’s exceptional bravery and commitment to duty while facing significant personal danger. Reflecting on the honour, Bharati noted his journey from Nepal, where he arrived in 2015, and emphasised the collective effort involved in policing.
“To be recognised in this way is something I never expected when I first arrived in this country 2015, from my native Nepal,” he said. “While my name may be on the award, policing is never an individual effort. The actions for which I am being recognised were only possible because of the support, training and trust of my colleagues who stand beside me.”
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon praised Bharati’s conduct during the incident, highlighting his selflessness and dedication. “To put his own safety aside, during the dangerous events at Croydon Park on that day, is truly remarkable,” Lanyon said. “He exemplifies the qualities and commitment I see in our officers every day.”
The award underscores the risks law enforcement officers face and recognises outstanding service under hazardous conditions.
