A nurse employed as an advanced nurse practitioner with the Homeless Healthcare service in Southampton has been removed from the professional register following inappropriate conduct towards patients and a colleague. Dean Thomson was found to have used offensive language, including telling one patient to “f*** off” and advising another to “shower because she smelt,” according to a decision by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

In addition to the remarks directed at patients, Thomson reportedly spoke to a colleague in a manner that caused her to become distressed and cry, the NMC committee was told during the hearing. These incidents led to concerns about his fitness to practise.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s committee determined that Thomson’s behavior breached professional standards and justified his removal from the nursing register. He retains the right to appeal the decision.

The case highlights ongoing challenges within healthcare settings concerning professional conduct, particularly when working with vulnerable populations such as those experiencing homelessness. Employers and regulatory bodies continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining respectful communication standards with both patients and staff members.
