A nurse at a Cheshire care home has been suspended for 12 months following findings that she attended work intoxicated, putting vulnerable residents at risk. Karen Jane Makinson was found to have been “extremely intoxicated” during a shift on June 4, 2024, at Church House Care Home in Nantwich. The care facility accommodates 44 residents, many of whom suffer from dementia, strokes, or are receiving end-of-life care, according to a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) panel.
The tribunal heard that Ms. Makinson was observed swaying as she moved through the care home and required assistance from colleagues to arrange a taxi to leave the premises safely. The panel determined her state posed a “significant risk of harm” to the residents under her care.
Ms. Makinson denied allegations that she was intoxicated while on duty. However, following the hearing, she was dismissed from her position on June 14, 2024. The NMC panel ruled that her fitness to practise was impaired and imposed a suspension lasting one year. The decision reflects concerns over patient safety and professional standards within the nursing profession.
