In Dubai, a mother named R. Pavithra shared her experience when her six-year-old son unexpectedly developed persistent coughing and discomfort after eating nuts. The symptoms escalated quickly, prompting an urgent hospital visit where her son was admitted overnight. This case highlights the unpredictability and rapid progression that can occur with nut allergies, often catching families unprepared.
Medical specialists emphasize that early recognition is critical. Dr. Rajashree Ganesh, a specialist in internal medicine at Medicare Shaikh Saqr Al Qasimi Hospital, noted that initial signs of nut allergies may include itching or tingling in the mouth, swelling of the lips or tongue, hives, redness of the skin, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or vomiting. Respiratory symptoms like coughing and wheezing can also occur but are not always the first indicators. In young children, subtle signs such as irritability, unusual fatigue, behavioral changes, or feeding difficulties may precede more obvious reactions.
Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, also a specialist in internal medicine at RAK Hospital, explained that adults may experience symptoms like dizziness, chest tightness, or light-headedness, while young children might display behaviors such as rubbing their tongue or scratching their ears. She stressed that any symptoms involving multiple body systems soon after nut exposure warrant immediate attention.
In the event of accidental exposure, particularly for individuals with a known severe nut allergy, immediate administration of epinephrine via an auto-injector is essential. Dr. Kaur emphasized epinephrine as the most effective treatment for anaphylaxis, capable of rapidly reversing airway swelling, bronchospasm, and cardiovascular collapse. She advised that once epinephrine is used, emergency services must be contacted without delay.
Dr. Mufaza Rashid, a consultant in family medicine with the Dubai Health Authority, underscored that while antihistamines may alleviate mild allergic symptoms, they do not replace epinephrine for severe reactions. She urged patients with prescribed auto-injectors to carry them consistently and ensure caregivers and educators are trained to use them in an emergency.
