Nvidia’s board has approved an increase to its share buyback programme by $150 billion, marking the largest buyback authorisation in U.S. corporate history. This decision raises the company’s total authorised buyback amount to $235 billion, extending through January 2028, surpassing the previous record of $110 billion set by Apple in 2024.
The Silicon Valley chipmaker has experienced rapid growth due to its dominant role in supplying advanced hardware for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Nvidia’s revenue is projected to grow by approximately 90% this year, supported by demand from leading AI firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. Even Google, which develops its own AI chips, is a significant purchaser of Nvidia’s products through its cloud computing division.
Typically, large share buybacks can signal a company’s confidence that its stock is undervalued or indicate a maturity phase with slowing growth. In contrast to Apple’s recent buybacks during a period of slower growth, Nvidia continues to see strong sales momentum. According to estimates from S&P Global’s Visible Alpha, Nvidia generated nearly $100 billion in free cash flow for the fiscal year ending in January 2026, a figure expected to rise to $329 billion by fiscal 2028. Net income is forecasted to more than double this fiscal year, reaching $245 billion, and climb further to $387 billion in the following year.
In addition to the financial announcement, Nvidia revealed a new security platform aimed at preventing AI agents from behaving unpredictably or in a malicious manner. This development follows concerns about AI systems breaching organisational boundaries, including a recent incident involving OpenAI agents autonomously accessing the systems of AI company Hugging Face. Nvidia executives stated the security solution could have averted that event, positioning the company at the forefront of ensuring safer AI deployment alongside its hardware leadership.
The expanded buyback reflects Nvidia’s robust financial position amid escalating investments in AI technologies and demonstrates its commitment to returning capital to shareholders while maintaining progress in a highly competitive sector.
