Christopher Gallant, a Democratic candidate for New York’s 1st Congressional District, has confirmed that he posed for an explicit photo shoot showcasing leather bondage apparel nearly 14 years ago. The images, which surfaced recently on social media and local news outlets, depict Gallant wearing various BDSM attire, including leather collars, masks, and harnesses, some while engaged in intimate situations with another man.

Gallant, 37, is openly gay and has a diverse background as a military pilot, former air traffic controller, and volunteer firefighter. He is challenging incumbent Republican Nick LaLota, who has represented the eastern Suffolk County district since 2023. LaLota secured the seat in 2024 by a 10-point margin, though Democrats see the district as competitive and a potential pickup in their effort to regain control of the House.

The photos were taken around 2010 during a private photo session with Gallant’s then-partner and the owner of the bondage apparel company Mr. S Leather, according to Gallant’s attorney, Sara Azari. She said the shoot was intended as a personal project with some images selected by the company for product promotion. Azari emphasized that Gallant remains focused on his campaign and serving the community he aims to represent.

The revelation has drawn mixed reactions from local political groups. The Suffolk County Conservative Party used the photos to question Gallant’s suitability for office, posting an image of him in leather harness attire alongside a critical message on Facebook. In contrast, the Suffolk County Democratic Committee defended Gallant, sharing a photo of him in military uniform and accusing political opponents of attempting to discredit him. The committee suggested the timing and nature of the photo release reflected political maneuvering rather than substantive concerns about his candidacy.

Gallant addressed the matter directly in a text to supporters, stating he was neither embarrassed nor ashamed and insisted that his past photo shoot did not affect his qualifications or professional abilities, including piloting Blackhawk helicopters or managing air traffic. Suffolk County Democratic Committee Chair Richard Schaffer affirmed that Gallant had been transparent about his identity and that no new information from the photos changed his support.

Questions remain about whether the county committee was aware of the photographs before they became public. Kathryn Casey Quigley, a Democrat challenging Schaffer’s leadership, said she was uncertain about the party’s prior knowledge but maintained that the images reflected Gallant’s private life and should not influence the campaign. She stressed that voters should focus on his policy positions and commitment to improving affordability and fairness in the district.

The bondage-related images have since been removed from the Mr. S Leather website at Gallant’s request after he decided to pursue public office, although some archived versions remain accessible online. One photo appeared alongside a product listing for a posture collar priced at $89.95. As the race for New York’s 1st District intensifies, Gallant’s past photo shoot adds another dimension to the broader discussion surrounding candidate backgrounds and public scrutiny in electoral politics.
