A recent study examining the financial barriers to socializing across the United States has found New York to be the most expensive state for engaging in typical social activities. According to data analyzed by Manhattan Mental Health Counseling, New York scored 67.03 out of 100 on the cost index, reflecting high prices for common social expenses such as food, beverages, transit, and entertainment.

Key contributors to New York’s ranking include $8.50 draft beers, $6.50 cappuccinos, $140 monthly public transportation costs, and movie tickets averaging $22.50. These factors collectively make socializing in the state more financially demanding compared to most others in the country.

Washington state followed as the second most costly location despite having the highest average net monthly salary at $6,281. The average meal price was reported to be $28, with draft beers costing around $9. Washington’s overall cost of living has surged rapidly over the past decade, increasing at twice the rate of California, with particularly high gas prices and grocery costs ranking among the nation’s highest.

Rhode Island ranked third in social expenses, with average meals priced at $30.67. California came in fourth, notable for its gas prices averaging $1.46 per liter. Nevada rounded out the top five, characterized by steep grocery costs and $25 average dinners.

On the other end of the spectrum, South Dakota was identified as the most affordable state for social activities. Average costs there included $14.85 for meals and $4.58 for cappuccinos. Other low-cost states in the bottom five were Kentucky (47th), Mississippi (46th), Kansas (45th), and Iowa (44th).

The findings highlight significant regional disparities in the cost of social engagement, which may influence individuals’ ability to participate in community and leisure activities depending on their location.
