New York City officials have reported a significant increase in the detection of West Nile virus in mosquito samples this summer compared to last year. According to the city's Department of Health, as of July 25, 612 mosquito pools tested positive for the virus, nearly doubling the number recorded at the same point in 2025. This finding comes from testing more than 2,000 mosquito groups collected across all five boroughs.
Despite the rise in positive mosquito pools, no human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in New York City residents this season. City health authorities have responded by intensifying mosquito surveillance efforts, including the deployment of additional traps and the expansion of mosquito control activities in affected areas.
Since July, four targeted mosquito control operations have taken place, resulting in a reported 70% reduction in adult mosquito populations and an 85% decrease in West Nile-positive mosquito pools. The city's Health Commissioner, Dr. Alister F. Martin, stated that the detection of the virus in mosquitoes indicates the surveillance system is functioning as designed.
All five boroughs have experienced mosquito activity carrying the virus, with Staten Island and Queens facing the highest incidence rates. While most infections result in mild symptoms, West Nile virus has the potential to cause severe neurological conditions such as encephalitis or meningitis in some cases.
Officials continue to emphasize the importance of public vigilance and personal protective measures to reduce mosquito exposure as the city navigates the heightened risk this season.
