New York City officials have called on Amazon to remove a Halloween decoration from its online store, citing concerns that the display promotes antisemitic imagery. The item in question is a $219, six-foot animatronic witch produced by Collective Home, which features a spell book marked with a Star of David.
The City Council’s Antisemitism Task Force, in a formal complaint sent to Amazon on October 14, urged the retailer to take down the listing. The bipartisan group expressed concern that the witch’s possession of the Star of David, a recognized Jewish symbol, in a context associated with witchcraft and sinister imagery could perpetuate harmful stereotypes.
“While it is unclear if this symbol was intended to depict a hexagram or another occult symbol, the Star of David is the most widely recognizable symbol of the Jewish people,” the task force wrote. The letter emphasized the current environment of heightened antisemitism in New York City and across the United States, stating that the use of such a symbol in a threatening context is particularly troubling.
The council members warned that this type of imagery risks being perceived as demeaning and offensive to Jewish communities and could potentially incite violence. They underscored the long history of antisemitism and the need for sensitivity regarding symbols associated with Judaism.
Local reports highlighted a Brooklyn resident who received the decoration unexpectedly and was disturbed upon realizing the symbol’s significance. As of now, Amazon has not publicly responded to the request for comment.
