New York City FC was held to a 1-1 draw by Los Angeles FC on Saturday night at Citi Field in Queens, a result that leaves the home team struggling to climb the Eastern Conference standings with four games remaining in the regular season. The draw marks another missed opportunity for NYCFC to secure a much-needed win, as the club currently sits 11th in the conference.

LAFC took the lead just before halftime with a stoppage-time free kick. In the 44th minute, Aiden O’Neill received a yellow card for a foul that granted LAFC a dangerous set piece outside the box. Midfielder Leo Watta capitalized on the chance, striking a precise right-footed shot into the top right corner of the net past goalkeeper Matt Freese, who appeared momentarily frozen.

NYCFC responded early in the second half to level the score. The home team earned a corner kick in the 59th minute, which Nicolás Fernández Mercau delivered into the box. Andres Perea rose to meet the ball with a flying header, finding the back of the net to bring NYCFC back into the match.

Despite the equalizer, the home side came close to defeat in stoppage time when LAFC star Son Heung-min broke free inside the box and took a shot that struck the post. The ball did not cross the line, allowing NYCFC to escape with a point as the game ended shortly after.

Saturday’s draw continued a troubling pattern for New York City FC, who have yet to register a victory at Citi Field this season. The last time the team won at the Queens venue, located near their future home at Etihad Park, was on May 17, 2025, in a win against Red Bull New York.

With playoff positions still at stake, NYFC will aim to convert their remaining opportunities into wins as the season approaches its conclusion.
