An off-duty New York Police Department detective was released from the hospital Monday evening after being stabbed multiple times during an attempted robbery in the Bronx last week. Detective José Mercedes, a 10-year veteran assigned to the 44th Precinct, was attacked while clearing out the trunk of his car in the Norwood neighborhood on Friday afternoon.
Authorities reported that two suspects on an electric bike approached Mercedes and attempted to steal his gold chain. When Mercedes resisted, the assailants stabbed him seven times before forcibly removing the chain from his neck. Surveillance footage captured the aftermath, showing Mercedes bleeding heavily before bystanders rushed him to Jacobi Medical Center for emergency treatment.
Upon his discharge, Mercedes was greeted by dozens of fellow officers who applauded and saluted as bagpipes played outside the hospital. Despite the severity of his injuries, Mercedes stood from his wheelchair and gave a thumbs-up to the crowd, signaling his determination to recover.
The suspects remain at large as police continue their investigation. Officials have not released descriptions or additional details regarding the attackers, but efforts to identify and apprehend them remain ongoing. Mercedes’ colleagues praised his resilience and commitment to duty as he begins his recovery.
