New York’s decision to legalize mobile sports betting in 2022 has substantially boosted state gaming revenues, making it the second-largest source of gaming-related tax income after the state Lottery, according to a recent report from Comptroller Tom DiNapoli.

The analysis reveals that mobile sports wagering has driven a 32.7% overall growth in New York’s gaming revenues over the past decade, while revenues from other forms of gambling have slightly declined by 0.8%. Since its introduction, mobile sports betting has quickly become a major contributor to the state's finances, generating more than $1 billion annually in taxes.

Between fiscal years 2023 and 2026, tax collections from the state’s 51% levy on gross gaming revenue from sports betting increased by 78%, rising from $727.4 million to an estimated $1.3 billion. This surge reflects the rapid expansion of mobile sports wagering activity, with a total of $91.2 billion wagered on mobile platforms since the market’s launch in January 2022. These bets have produced $8.3 billion in tax revenue for the state to date.

Last year, New York hosted approximately 7.2 million unique mobile sports-wagering accounts. In 2025 alone, over 2 million transactions were recorded, with the average wager amounting to around $3,500 per bet. Despite the growth in sports betting, traditional gambling avenues have not seen similar increases, highlighting the shift in consumer behavior toward mobile platforms.

The report underscores the significant impact of legal sports betting in New York’s broader gaming industry and illustrates how the state’s early adoption of mobile wagering has transformed its revenue landscape.
